Post-operative precautions following local anesthesia:

  • Often times the tongue, cheek, lip and surrounding tissues will be numb.
  • Please watch your child closely as young children will often bite, chew, play with or scratch their lips, cheeks or tongue following local anesthesia.
  • It is wise to avoid eating until the effects of the anesthesia have fully worn off, typically within 2 hours following the procedure.

Post-operative instructions following baby tooth extraction:

  •  First 24 Hours:
    • Following extraction, a certain amount of bleeding is to be expected.  Please have your child bite on gauze for roughly 30 minutes.  You may change out the gauze intermittenly as it becomes soiled.
    • Do not rinse or wash the mouth today.  
    • Do not spit forcefully or drink through a straw today.  This will dislodge the blood clot that is forming to allow proper healing.
    • For your own comfort, soft foods are indicated for the first 24 hours.  Drink plenty of fluids, NO SODA!!
    • It is recommended to give your child over the counter Tylenol or Motrin per the manufacturers instructions for post-operative pain.
  • After the first 24 hours:
    • You can rinse as desired
    • Brush your child's teeth, taking care not to brush the extraction site roughly

Post-operative instructions following sedation:

  • Your child may be drowsy and must remain under adult supervision until fully recovered from the effects of sedation
  • Children may be irritable after treatment
  • Restrict activities for the remainder of the day
  • Prohibit potentially harmful activities such as bike riding, swimming, using playground equipment, or any activity where balance is important. 

Post-operative instructions following dental trauma

  • It is important to keep the mouth as clean as possible to help with the healing process.
  • It is important to take all medications prescribed or recommended by your dentist as instructed.  
  • It is important to eat a soft diet to give the teeth and the tissues the best chance to heal quickly.
