At what age should I my child get braces?
The American Association of Orthodontics recommends all children have an orthodontic evaluation around 7 years old. This does not mean all children need braces at 7. Depending on their occlusion (bite) and facial profile, some children can benefit from early treatment due to the severity of their needs.
Is it Normal for my Mouth to Be Sore?
Yes! Typically for the first 5 days following an adjustment, teeth will be very sore, especially with biting pressure. If severe, we recommend rinsing with warm salt water and taking any over-the-counter pain medication you normally take for minor headaches. It is also recommended to eat a soft diet until the discomfort subsides. Your lips and cheeks may also experience discomfort as they are adjusting to the new braces in your mouth. For this, we recommend the use of orthodontic wax on the braces until the cheeks "toughen" up and become use to the braces.
How long does Orthodontic Treatment Take?
This answer varies depending on each patient's individual needs. On average cases take between 20-24 months. Things you can do to help maintain this schedule are to wear all appliances and rubberbands per your doctors recommendations, maintain a regular appointment schedule and call the office if something breaks immediately.
Must a parent/guardian be present?
Not if this has been discussed with our staff prior to the appointment. It is important to be able to reach a parent/guardian at anytime during the appointment.
Will I have to take my child out of school for appointments?
Yes. Although we understand your concern in taking your child out of school for routine appointments, our afterschool hours fill up quickly. We will try to accomodate your needs as best we can.
What foods must I avoid/ What foods can I eat?
AVOID: ice, hard candies, hard pretzels, hard bread, corn chips, gum, caramel, taffy, licorice, other sticky candies. Also avoid chewing on pens/pencils, fingernails, etc.
RECOMMENDED: reasonably soft foods...please use common sense when eating as the braces can break off!
Can I still play sports/musical instruments?
Yes, you can do both! With sports, we highly recommend wearing a special mouthguard for contact sports. Please ask our staff regarding which mouthguard is best for your child. With musical instruments, there is usually no limitations but rather a short adjustment period.
